Dyckman Subject: Re: Fwd: Caroline Glick to speak in San Diego July 20 - RSVP to FIDF Dear Friends, I have received flack from several people for my forwarding of the notice about Caroline Glick's upcoming talk which Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) is sponsoring at Congregation Beth El on Tisha B'Av (*), late afternoon / early evening about an hour before the observance ends. ZOA is not involved in the sponsorship of this event. While being profoundly disappointed with the unfortunate choice of time, I forwarded the notice because it is a Zionist event, also noting that at least it was not scheduled for Erev Tisha B'Av, the evening when Tisha B'Av begins. Caroline Glick is one of the best columnists on the subject of Israel. I don't see a religious violation in having such a talk at the scheduled time. A talk dealing with the adversity that Israel is facing may actually fit in with the observance, just as other synagogues show a religious-themed video dealing with tragic events of the past. I hope there will be some content that acknowledges the solemn day. However, as a community event, for many people it conflicts with observing the end of Tisha B'Av in one's own synagogue in the synagogue's traditional way, particularly if one is fasting. It will be inaccessible to a sizable segment of the Jewish community who otherwise would very much want to attend. It is regretted that the event was scheduled for this time. Sincerely, Howard L. Dyckman, Ph.D. President, San Diego District ZOA (*) Tisha B'Av - a day of fasting and readings in remembrance of the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem and other tragedies that befell the Jewish people. This year, 2010, it runs from sundown July 19 until it is dark after sunset July 20.
